Simon de Anda and the Resistance Against the British

When Manila was invaded by the British in 1762, the Spaniards were divided. The position of Governor-General was vacant so the Archbishop took over the government. He wanted to surrender to the British, but a lot of Spaniards did not like this. That was why the Royal Audiencia elected Simon de Anda as the new Governor-General to remove the Archbishop from power.

Anda did not want to surrender but recognized that he can’t defeat the British. So he escaped Manila and decided to build an army in Bulacan and Pampanga. However, another war was avoided when the British left Manila in 1764 after a lot of negotiations in Europe between Spain and Britain.
