At the corner across our shop, located at Banquero Street (off Escolta, beside Estero dela Reina), stands another lonely historical marker by National Historical Institute (now NHCP) dedicated to Patricio Mariano (1877-1935). Today marks his 142nd birthday.

Mariano is a multi-faceted nationalist. Aside from being a known Katipunero, he is a pundit, poet, playwright, dramatist, short story writer, novelist, journalist, violinist, and painter. Among his famous works are the Tagalog translation of Rizal’s novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

Simple monuments like this need not be forgotten. Sometimes they are already within our reach, seeing them every day of our lives, yet some usually take them for granted. For this reason, we aim to feature them on our social media to continuously remind the present generations, especially fellow youth about the profound contributions of such relatively unsung heroes like Patricio Mariano.
