1996

On this day, August 11, in 1996, Filipino basketball legend, statesman and public servant Ambrosio Padilla died. He was born on Dec. 7, 1910, in Lingayen, Pangasinan.

Born on Dec. 7, 1910, in Lingayen, Pangasinan, Padilla first became known in his youth as a basketball star who played for the Ateneo Blue Eagles, and later, for the National Basketball Team in the 1930s.

After retiring from basketball, Padilla practiced law and was appointed Solicitor General by President Ramon Magsaysay in 1954. He was elected senator for three terms in 1957, 1963 and 1969, his last term being interrupted by Martial Law.

Padilla joined the opposition to the Marcos regime and after the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, President Corazon Aquino appointed him Vice Chairman of the Constitutional Commission that drafted the 1987 Constitution. He was inducted in the Philippine Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. (edhistory.ph)
